As communities begin to reopen and emerge from COVID lockdowns, strong and effective leadership will be critical for making that a smooth transition.
What you can do to prepare your business, and yourself? Here are some insights from a recent Harvard Business Review article.
For me, items #2 and #3 from the article stand out as the most important for leaders to ponder.
What is your plan for bouncing back?
As the fog of uncertainty begins to lift, it will reveal a very different world. We might not have all of the variables of the equation just yet, but we do have the ability to start scenario planning, and plotting the course toward the “new normal”. How are you planning? What information are you starting to gather to inform your plans?
How will your culture and identity change?
Work from Home, Zoom, the Curve. Our vocabulary has already changed due to COVID. When we return to work, how will the organizational structure change? How will individuals and teams interact? What new processes and procedures will take hold?
Just as important, how will the culture of your suppliers and customers change? How will you need to modify your behavior to adapt?
How will individuals impacted by the virus, or the shutdown, have changed? What role will they play in the process? How can you be flexible without losing ground toward your goals?
The main obstacle – quarantine – will be lifted sooner than later it seems. If you haven’t begun preparing for what that will be like, start and start soon.
Inevitably each of us, and the world around us, will emerge from this, albeit changed. Will you fight that change, or embrace it?
If you need help with planning or gaining understanding around these new perspectives, consider coaching services.
To get you started, take some time, and consider the two questions above and this prompt:
What have I learned during quarantine? How will I use that learning to be a more impactful leader, post-quarantine?
